Reading comprehension
A crime-free life

Every day, newspaper buyers can read stories about crime and the criminal is often an offender who was caught red-handed or sentenced to prison.
What is rare to read are the stories in which people succeeded in turning their lives around and started behaving legally. Surveys demonstrated that the majority of people who commit crime stop offending after they are given a punishment. They might have been found guilty for robbery, burglary or shoplifting, been arrested and then sentenced if police found evidence of their illegal actions.
Many criminals among the interviewed had had a history of persistent offending. They had carried out a dishonest life, committing serious crimes like murders, smuggling and kidnapping. Sometimes they are first-time offenders; in other cases they might have been members of organized crime groups and may have been punished by the judges before.
According to the surveys, the vast majority of criminals in prison said they wanted to stop offending and most believed they could succeed in becoming crime-free. Almost all of them said that they could manage to have what they described as a "normal life", centred around conventional adult roles in work and family life.

At the start of the book Poirot is at a hotel in Turkey, where he was ________ to find an offender who was guilty ________ a crime, and he is sitting down to dinner when he notices an American tourist, a very non-conformist man. The following day, while he is heading for the railway station where he ________ to take the Orient Express Train, the same man tells Poirot to act ________ his case as he says that his life is in danger. He thinks he will be murdered. Poirot refuses despite the man (named Ratchett) offers him a large sum of money. When Ratchett asks why, Poirot says it is because he doesn't like his face! During the night, Poirot hears strange noises from other compartments in the train and the next morning he discovers that Ratchett has been murdered in his compartment. The head of the train company Monsieur Bouc, who is also travelling on the train, asks Poirot to ________ and so the story continues with Poirot interviewing all the passengers. It is a very interesting detective story, because it is never irrational and it is impossible not to finish the book, looking for the criminal to be arrested.
