A hooded item of clothing similar to our 'hoodie' first appeared in the Middle Ages, when monks wore tunics with them, and people who worked outside wore a similar type of clothing.
Champion, the sportswear brand, produced the first hooded sweatshirts as we know them today in the 1930s, to protect workers in New York from extreme wind and cold.
