The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC includes many remarkable works of art painted by Dutch 17th-century painters. More than 130 paintings from this period were bought or were donated in the past and are displayed in the gallery. There are paintings here that were created by some of the finest masters of the Dutch Golden Age, including Rembrandt and Johannes Vermeer. There are outstanding examples of portraits, landscapes, biblical and mythological scenes. Some of the paintings were not appreciated or admired at the time they were made. Incredible to think they are now worth a fortune and are desired by the wealthiest people in the world. It is our good fortune that they are kept and are displayed in a public gallery where they are seen by people of all ages and all nationalities.
