STEP 5 Think further and prepare for your test: the turning point
Complete the text about the conclusion of Sonnet 130 with the adjectives and adverbs given. Then look at the prompts in brackets and write some extra reflections in your exercise book. You can use the final text as revision material for your test.

The phrase 'belied with false compare' is present in the last couplet of Sonnet 130, which is the turning point of the poem. (Explain that the turning point is not fixed. Give an example referring to other sonnets.) It suggests that some women in Shakespeare's day are ________ praised for their beauty, often through ________ comparisons to natural elements or mythological figures. The speaker, however, finds his mistress's genuine beauty far ________ to such ________ praise. (Quote the lines in T12 in your textbook where this is stated.)
In essence, these lines celebrate individuality and ________ love (Refer to the description of the Dark Lady and say in which ways her looks do not conform to the canons of beauty.), arguing that ________ beauty lies in authenticity rather than conformity to social standards.
