Reading: Discoveries and inventions
New discoveries and inventions are being made all the time. Just think of all the technology we are seeing nowadays. But what about some surprising discoveries of the past? The famous terracotta army in Xi'an in China was discovered by a group of local farmers when they were working on the land. They were looking for water when they observed the statue of a soldier. And the first microwave oven, something most people use nowadays, was invented by an army engineer. He was walking by a radar when some chocolate in his pocket melted. And what about penicillin? Alexander Fleming discovered that some mould had grown on his petri dishes while he was on holiday and did some experiments. The area surrounding the mould didn't have any bacteria around it. This was how the world's first antibiotic was discovered. And the first smoke detector was 'discovered' by a Swiss scientist who was trying to invent a sensor to detect poisonous gas. It registered the smoke from his cigarette instead.
