Reading: Promoting train-travels
During the summer holidays, Germans had the chance to travel around the country for only 9 euros a month. This ticket gave them unlimited travel on regional trains, trams and buses. It is estimated that about 1.8 million tons of CO2 emissions have been saved and it encouraged people to leave their cars at home. The experiment lasted 3 months, from June to August. 52 million tickets were sold and many of the tickets were bought by people who didn't usually use public transport. Many Germans say it's worth thinking about continuing the experiment, adding that subsidising public transport would encourage people to leave their cars at home.
Now, Spain is following suit and offering free travel on commuter and mid-distance regional trains. This scheme will be running until the end of 2022 and the main aim is to help commuters deal with rising prices. However, it will also benefit people travelling for leisure. They can use it for a specific destination or zone in the case of cities and pay a deposit which depends on the type of train. If they then travel on this line at least 16 times by the end of the year, they will obtain a refund. Barcelona has also reduced its metro fares by up to 50% for the same period.
This summer, if people bought a 9-euro ticket in Germany, they could get ________ on public transport. This helped to reduce ________ and meant that many people stopped using their ________. Spain is introducing a similar scheme to help regular travellers cope with ________. Users will pay a variable deposit, depending on their journey and will get their money back if they make over ________ journeys.

Listening: Rail travel in Europe
Many students embarking on a gap year might consider ________ round Europe to find themselves before facing the realities of adulthood and its responsibilities. Interrail can be seen as a modern Grand Tour, and thanks to the Project DiscoverEU, the European Union gives 60,000 young people a chance to ________ Europe by train completely free. The 60,000 tickets are allocated to member states of the Union based on population size. The programme is expected to open for ________ in October this year, with selected participants able to travel for a period of ________ days. DiscoverEU has been recently expanded and funded under Erasmus+, an educational programme that enables young people to study ________, meaning non-EU citizens are also allowed to take advantage of the travel pass scheme. The chosen travellers take part in a ________ meeting to discuss the meaning of the programme, and later join in some cultural activities with locals, preferably in places with historical, cultural or sustainable importance. The EU also encourages travellers to visit lesser-known ________ in more remote areas of Europe. The young people who apply will have to answer six quiz questions about European history and culture. The European Commission will then select the winners.
