Reading: Public statues of women
Putting women on pedestals
Padua has the largest public square in Italy and its canal is lined with many statues of important figures of the city's past. All 78 of them are of men. This lack of public recognition of women's achievements is evident all over the country, with only 200 statues of women in public spaces in Italy according to a recent report. There are two empty bases and there is a proposal to erect a statue of Cornaro Piscopia, the first woman in the world to graduate with a university degree. She obtained this in the University of Padua in 1678 and there is already a statue of the philosopher in the university grounds. The University will be celebrating its 800th anniversary in 2022 with its first ever female rector. There are few female rectors in Italian universities, only 8 currently. The new proposal is causing some controversy and a local politician pointed out that this may be a moment to learn from the past, without trying to change it, as the all-male statues are an expression of the past.
(Adapted from The New York Times)
A: 78 of Padua's statues can be found in the city's huge square.
B: There aren't enough public statues of women, according to the writer.
C: It's absolutely certain that a statue of the first female graduate will be erected.
D: The university of Padua will have been open for over 8 centuries by 2023.
E: Few women are in charge of universities in Italy.
