Reading – Free schools
Hi, I'm Sally and I go to a free school. They are a type of academy, and you don't have to pay to go there because they are not there to make a profit. There are more than 600 of these schools in England. I think our teachers are great and we often study subjects like Maths and Science in an innovative way because the school doesn't have to follow the national curriculum. It doesn't have to follow local authority rule either and can decide how much to pay teachers. Our head teacher is fantastic, and you can always go and talk to a counsellor if you have a problem. Personally, I like to chat with the librarian as she always recommends good books to read. My favourite subject is French. We often go to the language lab to practise and learn new vocabulary. I will have to spend some time in France on a school exchange, though, if I really want to improve. Maybe next year, but for the moment, I must study for my big History test tomorrow.
A: There are no fees at Sally's school.
B: The school has to be innovative in its teaching.
C: The school can decide the teachers' salaries.
D: Sally likes talking to the counsellor to get ideas.
E: They often study scientific subjects in the laboratory.
F: She has to study French for a test.
