Reading: Young people and elections
Young people are interested in politics, but often cynical of democratic institutions and dissatisfied with their electoral choices. According to recent studies, young voters wish they had more information. They often don't know how to make the right choice. Many feel that they don't know enough about the candidates themselves and that local politicians weren't making the effort to go out into the community and talk to them. Young people also have different priorities. Many are worried about the cost of living, for example, along with racial issues, climate change and immigration. They wish that politicians would deal with inequality in general. After all, as they grow up, they want to do their best and hope their government will, too. In several European countries citizens aged 16 or 17 can now vote in European Parliament elections. A Belgian minister said that by giving young people the chance to actively participate in their democracy, they can make their voices heard. It would also stimulate more interest in politics. After all, young people are the future, and should be able to help shape that future.
