Reading: Dating and relationships
Dating in the 80s
Russell: When I started dating in the 80s, we often met someone through a mutual friend. At the time, there was no texting and no dating sites. My friends and I used to go out together bowling, eating out, or going to the cinema. That's where I met my partner. If you were attracted to a person, then you used to get to know them better on a date. Nowadays, you can meet people online and modern daters seem to have clear ideas about what they want from a potential partner, even their height!
Leah: We used to spend a lot of time going out to bars and clubs and met people there. This was such fun because we dressed up. Occasionally we went to restaurants on dates, but this was usually for special occasions like Valentine's Day or a birthday. We didn't usually wear jeans on dates like they do today but dressed up in smart trousers and sparkly tops. Sometimes we used to go for a drive into the country with our partner at the weekend or go biking.
A: Russell spent a lot of time at home with his friends.
B: He met his partner while he was enjoying himself with his friends.
C: He thinks people now have higher expectations about partners than in the past.
D: Leah enjoyed choosing special clothes to go out in.
E: She often went for dates in restaurants.
F: Occasionally, she went out of town by car with her partner.
