Greater social mobility was one of the reasons behind the development of the new upper classes, but a lot of people were poor and hungry. Rich people, instead, started travelling around Britain, returning with works of art to adorn their houses. Italian Renaissance style influenced British architecture, such as Chiswick House on the Thames or Burlington House in Trafalgar Square. During this time, John and Charles Wesley founded a philosophical movement, Methodism, which stressed moral dignity and respectability, intemperance and method.
