Canterbury Cathedral was founded in 602 and Augustine became the first Bishop of Canterbury, the most important role within the Church of Rome. As a consequence of Christianisation, England joined Europe's ecclesiastical culture. The monasteries became important political centres where illuminated books were produced and where people were educated. The scholar Venerable Bede, 'the father of English literature', wrote his famous work in one of these places; he was the first person to use the word 'Angle-land'.
