The English Renaissance

The Renaissance developed in England later than in Europe and had its own characteristics. The influence of France was immense; however, England tried to free itself from what was connected to the Church of Luther. The main feature was its strong Catholic and Puritan basis, influenced by the Reformation. The literature of the period lacked the religious serenity of the Italian Renaissance and was more committed to the visual arts.

Edward VI was 14 when his father died. During his reign, as a consequence of the Catholic Reformation, religious services were held in Latin instead of English. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, prepared the Book of Common People, which was made obligatory with the Act of Supremacy. In 1553 the young king died. He had named Lady Jane Grey, his Catholic cousin, as his successor, but she never became queen because she was taken prisoner in a Protestant plot.
