Yuppies and homelessness
Thatcher invited young people to start up new charities, stimulating the emergence of a social phenomenon known as 'yuppies', that is, young male professionals. In this context, professional choices in the field of law, finance, medicine and advertising were seen as highly taxing, while teaching and a career in the social services were considered not sufficiently well paid. The young wanted to acquire impressive status symbols such as small cars and fancy clothes. An underclass of poor people emerged: they were the victims of this new collectivistic society.
