The Tempest: themes
An important theme in The Tempest is the warning against the advantages of English expansion. Prospero represents America: he has occupied a far-away island where he has organised himself and made the local inhabitants work for him. He uses force and promises of future richness to impose his power, becoming, in this way, a symbol for the military power Europe was exercising in Shakespeare's time.
