The Restoration theatre
The Puritans had closed down the theatres, but, with the restoration of the republic, theatres were made legal again in 1660. Theatres were roofed, they had bulbs and footlights; there was a drop curtain and a painted movable feast. Actors were now tied to the theatre by contract and actresses played male roles. The audience belonged to the upper classes, who used to go to the theatre to see the plays and also to meet fashionable playwrights.
