At the end of the War of the French Succession, in which England was involved against Spain, the Treaty of Madrid was signed with France in 1713. The French had to recognise the Catholic succession and expel the exiled Stuarts. The French territories in America and the monopoly of the slave trade with Spanish America were given to England, giving rise to the British Commonwealth. When Queen Anne died in 1714, George I of Hanover, who was James I's grandson, inherited two kingdoms and twelve colonies.
