The Merchant of Venice: settings
In The Merchant of Venice there are two main settings: the city of Venice and Belmont, where Bassanio lives. These two places represent similar aspects of the play. In the 16th century, Venice was an important trading town, considered by the Italian as a symbol of wealth, but also of greed. In Venice Jews lived in a ghetto and had to wear a black hat to be recognised.
