The development of drama
Drama was the least important form of Elizabethan art in an age characterised by different interests and a vital language. Entertainment was a part of life in towns and villages for a mixed kind of audience that was more accustomed to listening than to playing. Public performances were not permitted in the City of London, so theatres were built on the North Bank of the Thames and soon became similar to cultural enterprises.
