Reading STEP 2 Practise with a text about Fairtrade
GAPPED TEXT. Five sentences have been removed from the text below. For each question, choose the correct answer. Write the correct letters (A-H) in the gaps. There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

A They grow mostly in East Africa, in nations like Kenya.
B Famous brands are showing an interest in them.
C This means they have a lower carbon footprint compared to flowers grown in the colder, cloudier climates of European countries.
D This way, the whole production process is respectful both of the workers and of nature.
E Gender committees are present on these farms.
F It allows workers to invest in healthcare and education.
G More and more people are willing to buy Fairtrade products.
H In the UK, major retailers like Lidl, Aldi, Coop and Asda sell them.

Say it with (Fairtrade) flower!
If you like giving people flowers as a present on special occasions, you should spend your money on Fairtrade ones. 1  ________ The advantage of this area of the world is that it is very warm and sunny there. The flowers grow in naturally heated greenhouses rather than in artificially heated ones. 2  ________ Indeed, research has shown that roses produced on Fairtrade farms in Kenya produce 5.5 times lower greenhouse gas emissions, and 6.5 times lower energy demand, than roses grown in the Netherlands, even considering the air transport to Europe.

A further bonus for the environment is the fact that farms working with Fairtrade must guarantee that they do not use pesticides. Moreover, Fairtrade-certified farms ensure safe working conditions for their employees and respect workers' rights and dignity. This aspect is even more meaningful if you consider that most of the workforce on flower farms is made up of women. 3  ________ They help women become aware of their rights, and increase their self-esteem. These farms receive a Fairtrade Premium of 10% for every stem sold. 4  ________ Part of the premium is also used in the running of the farms to plant trees and improve irrigation systems.

Fairtrade flowers are not difficult to find. 5  ________ Pick them up while you are doing your daily shop: you will bring a smile to the face of who receives them and contribute to the well-being of flower farming communities around the world.
