Othello was written at the beginning of the sixteenth century. It is based on a story about treason by an English writer, but Shakespeare's hero is a greater man and servant compared to the original one. Elizabethan playwrights set their plays in Venice because the Italians were considered honest. Moreover, in Venice women were said to be very rich, while men were considered easily jealous.
