The novel focuses on the theme of growing up and on the child's impossibility to survive in the adult's world. In Wonderland Alice finds a place where the way of living is rather different from her own and slowly starts to despise the creatures she meets. Eventually she loses part of her childish appearance and at that point she wakes up back in the real world, that is, the world of the future. A related theme is that of animals: since Alice keeps growing and shrinking, she is very confused and disoriented about who she really is.
