Society in Chaucer's time

In the 14th century there was a new rising noble class composed of merchants, landowners and farmers who had all become very rich. The silk trade gave little to many people who produced it and to those who transported it. In towns there were also other artisans who were organised in 'guilds', which were supported by their own members. These organisations were really important because they controlled goods, prices and wages, and also forbade fairs during which comic plays were often performed.
