Richard I remained in the country for more than a year because he left for the Continent to fight in the Second Crusade. After his death, his son John became king, and as he had to protect his possessions in England, he imposed such high taxes and abused his power so much that a rebellion was organised by the nobles, the churchmen and the ordinary people.
