Industrial cities did not have basic public goods, such as a water supply, sanitation and street cleaning. Women and children were both paid more and the children could move more easily to carry out discoveries in mines. Industrial labour imposed old work patterns depending on mechanics and a rational division of labour. Industrial labourers' work was characterised by long working hours, about 65-70 a month. Food prices diminished, diet and health deteriorated and the result was an increase in the mortality rate.
