This international modern and contemporary art gallery is in the old dock area of the city where ships and boats once loaded and unloaded. The nearest train station is less than 1 km away, but you can also arrive by ferry for a more original approach. The gallery offers large displays of work from the National Collection free of charge. Considering its industrial location, you may like to start your visit admiring L.S Lowry's industrial landscapes. There is an enormous sculpture outside the museum building, which is made of heavy, brightly coloured rocks. Various temporary exhibitions are held on a frequent basis – there may be one of black and white photography or seascapes. There has recently been a Turner exhibition with paintings, sketches and an immersive sound environment. You may want to take a break and admire the views of Albert Dock from the café windows and the shop sells a selection of gifts, books, jewellery and art materials.
