The Merchant of Venice: plot (first and second acts)
The first act begins in a street in ________, where Antonio meets his friend Bassanio, who is going to travel to Belmont to win Portia.
Portia's suitors must choose among three ________. The man who chooses the one containing her portrait will marry her.

In The Merchant of Venice there are two main settings: the city of Venice and Belmont, where Bassanio lives. These two places represent similar aspects of the play. In the 16th century, Venice was an important trading town, considered by the Italian as a symbol of wealth, but also of greed. In Venice Jews lived in a ghetto and had to wear a black hat to be recognised.
