Reading: Sustainable foods
The food we eat
One way to cut down your personal carbon footprint is to stop eating meat and, if possible, dairy products, or at least reduce them. Cattle farming uses up to 100 times more land than growing protein-giving crops and we now know that legumes like beans and lentils can provide the necessary protein. You also need a good variety of vegetables and to add nuts, seeds to recipes. If you can't eliminate meat entirely, go for the environmentally friendly kind like organic meat. New ways of producing cell-cultured meat, fish and cheese alternatives are currently being developed. Pesticides and herbicides interfere with natural ecosystems and tend to reduce biodiversity. Organic foods are much better, but often cost more. It also seems that fish is less beneficial for the heart than we previously thought and much of it comes from non-sustainable sources. Finally, many people are already switching to plant-based milk, and we know that dairy farming is a huge cause of global heating. However, some non-dairy alternatives may need a lot of water to make and others such as soy and oat milks can be highly processed.
A: Some types of animal raising
B: It's better to eat meat
C: There are now new ways to create
D: Some substitute products
E: The author suggests
F: Environmentally friendly food

Use of English
Why plant trees?
Trees are vital to our ecosystem and are often referred to as 'the lungs of the Earth'. They absorb harmful gases like carbon dioxide and release oxygen, resulting in an increase in oxygen supply. One tree can emit ________ than 100 kilos of oxygen annually. Trees provide many benefits to us in our everyday lives as, in addition ________ filtering clean air, they help mitigate climate change, and create homes for thousands of species of ________ and animals. For these reasons, trees are helping to cut ________ on biodiversity loss. Planting helps combat many environmental issues like deforestation, soil erosion and desertification in semi-arid areas, while ________ improving the beauty and balance of the environment. There are many projects worldwide which aim to protect, preserve and plant trees, with ________ governments and volunteers getting involved. In some areas of India, for example, local authorities have realised they ________ act and are allowing groups to plant trees on vacant areas of land next to main roads and on the sides of hills. Volunteers can be trained to plant young trees, saplings, which are then looked after in the early stages of growth.

Listening: Water pollution
Dr Sherri Mason, a professor of chemistry and leading ________ in freshwater plastic pollution, who also supervised the recent analyses, believes they have enough data from looking at the impacts of microplastic contamination on wildlife to be highly concerned for the future. The ________ of global microplastic contamination is only starting to become clear, with studies in Germany finding fibres and fragments in all of the 24 beer brands they tested, as well as in ________ and sugar. In Paris, researchers discovered microplastics falling from the air, which deposits 3 to 10 tonnes of fibres on the city each year, and they found that it was also present in the ________ in people's homes.
Scientists agree that these tap water analyses have raised a ________ in warning, but that far more work is needed to replicate the results, find the sources of contamination and evaluate the possible health impacts of microplastics present in the ________. Although plastics are useful and hard to replace in the production of certain items, the management of plastic waste must be drastically improved.
