The Puritans
Puritanism was a religious movement founded with the aim of 'purifying' the Church of Rome from its Catholic elements. Puritans were already active under James VIII, but they took on new importance in the 17th century. They had a strong sense of moral conviction and wanted their clothes to be a model for the nation. The Puritans were against ecclesiastical rituals and outlook, and refused scholarly translations of the Bible. The movement was particularly popular in Manchester and in the south-west.
