Lieutenant Frederick Meyer is an American ambulance driver active on the Italian front during WWI. He falls in love with Catherine Barkley, a beautiful Irish nurse met in a hospital in Milan, where he was sent for a war wound. Back at the front, he realises he is in the middle of the retreat of the Italian army after their win at Caporetto. As Frederick only wants to be with Catherine, he deserts the army. The couple escapes across Lake Garda to Switzerland while Catherine is pregnant. She gives birth to a premature child and then dies.
