STEP 2 Comparing transformations
Reflect on the differences between Jekyll's first transformation and the later ones. Then read the text and complete it with the words given.

STEP 4 Think further and prepare for your test: evolution and regression
Read the text taken from a British Library article, in which curator Greg Buzwell discusses how Jekyll and Hyde reflect ideas on evolution. Decide if the statements are true or false. Then look at the prompts and write some extra reflections in your exercise book. You can use the final text as revision material for your test.

PROMPTS:
- Refer to the box 'Early Victorian thinkers' in the section 'The Victorian frame of mind' in your textbook to gather information about Darwin's evolutionary theories.
- Refer to STEP 3 and STEP 4 to discuss how Jekyll's inability to control Hyde might be considered a form of regression or degeneration into the bestial.
- Use the first two prompts to explain how Stevenson used Darwin's theories in his work.
A:
Buzwell argues that interpreting the book as a conflict between good and evil is too simple.
B:
Buzwell reminds the readers that Mr Enfield describes Hyde as frightening because of his violent behaviour.
C:
Charles Darwin's theories inspired all late-Victorian novels.
D:
The text suggests that Hyde's appearance is considered disturbing because it reminds people of humanity's evolutionary origins.
E:
The text states that Dr Lanyon became ill because he was unable to accept that a morally upright individual could hide a violent and primitive side.
